Questions To Ask A Property Manager When Moving From Out Of State

Jesse Obrien

If you're moving from out of state, there are plenty of things you may have in mind when apartment hunting. When you have the opportunity to speak to a property manager before signing a lease, you'll have the time to ask plenty of questions. Instead of feeling misled with an apartment once you've moved in, you can ask the following questions to clear up any confusion about an apartment building or unit.

Request a Virtual Tour

Living far away from the city you're moving to can make it challenging to get a clear idea of what the apartment will be like. Instead of relying only on photos or a video that could have been filmed years ago in a separate unit, it's wise to request a virtual tour.

Having a virtual tour done via your phone or computer webcam can allow you to get a more realistic view of the apartment and the ability to ask questions about the unit before committing to the unit. The virtual tour can also include the grounds and any included amenities that come with the apartment. This could include a laundry room, parking space, and a front lobby.

Discuss the Move-In Process

If you've decided that the apartment is the right fit for your needs, it's wise to discuss the move-in process and what to expect. You don't want to be in a situation where the cost of your initial move is a lot more expensive than anticipated due to a security deposit, first month's rent, and pet deposits.

When speaking to the property manager, you'll have the time to ask any questions and can get a total price for the expenses involved in your move.

Avoid Scams Over Payment

When moving from out of state, there's always a risk involved in renting an apartment. This is especially true if you're not able to see the apartment in person. Doing your own research about the apartment building and management company can help clear up any doubts over whether the apartment is legitimate.

As you prepare to go apartment hunting, you'll have plenty of questions regarding pricing and the apartment unit and building details. Instead of feeling overwhelmed with your choices of apartments available, you can keep the above tips in mind to find an apartment that's located out of state. These precautions can help you make the right decision about where to rent and what features to look into.

About Me
Basics of Property Management: Screening Potential Tenants

For the last several years, I've used a property management firm to help with my rental properties. One of the tasks that they handle for me is screening applicants who would like to move into one of my vacant units. Their expertise has helped me lower my tenant turnover and find people who want to stay with me for years. Part of the process is a tenant screening credit check. Before any further contact takes place, my manager orders credit reports from at least two agencies. That is enough to tell us if an applicant is a good financial risk. Assuming the references work out, I meet the candidate and make the final decision. If you own rental properties, let me tell you more about the benefits of having a property manager. I'm betting you'll find this type of arrangement will work for you too.
