Tips For Selecting The Right Apartment

Jesse Obrien

When you are looking to rent a new apartment, there are a lot of different variables to consider. From the apartment price to its size and number of bedrooms, there are many details you will need to evaluate to make sure it will serve as quality housing for your current needs. Here are some tips to help you as you search for the right apartment to rent.

Check the Parking Situation

The parking area in an apartment home can vary in terms of the space outside and its location, such as if it is in a rural or urban location. Some apartments provide you with designated covered parking that is reserved for you anytime, day or night. Other apartments provide a number of parking stalls on a first-come-first-serve basis each day. Then, other apartment communities may not have a full parking lot for all tenants, but allow on-street parking where you will need to get your parallel parking skills up to par. Apartment communities that are in an urban location might provide you access to rent a spot in a nearby parking garage. Talk to the property manager to see what type of parking is available. Will you need to park a large work truck or a personal pickup truck where you need the space to do so? Or if you have a household that has more than two vehicles, you should check with the apartment management to make sure all your vehicles will have a space to park.

Consider the Apartment Space

The interior of the apartment you choose is going to provide you with any conveniences you will need and the number of bedrooms you need for your family.  If you need a two- or three-bedroom apartment, make sure each bedroom is adequate in size. In addition to the number of bedrooms, look at the space of the unit to make sure your possessions and furnishings are going to fit within. Evaluate closet space, the linen closet, the bathroom closet, and any pantry in the kitchen. Some apartments don't have a designated pantry closet so you will need to keep your food storage in the kitchen cabinets with your dishes or bring along your own storage cabinet to place in the kitchen area.

If you will be bringing season items, sports equipment, or other tools that you will need to store away until you will need to use them, look at the potential for a storage closet or outdoor storage unit that comes with the apartment rental. You may be able to keep these extras on the property without having to rent an additional storage unit and keep your possessions close while they are kept safe in storage.

About Me
Basics of Property Management: Screening Potential Tenants

For the last several years, I've used a property management firm to help with my rental properties. One of the tasks that they handle for me is screening applicants who would like to move into one of my vacant units. Their expertise has helped me lower my tenant turnover and find people who want to stay with me for years. Part of the process is a tenant screening credit check. Before any further contact takes place, my manager orders credit reports from at least two agencies. That is enough to tell us if an applicant is a good financial risk. Assuming the references work out, I meet the candidate and make the final decision. If you own rental properties, let me tell you more about the benefits of having a property manager. I'm betting you'll find this type of arrangement will work for you too.
